Punjab sees 49 fresh cases
One Covid-related death was reported in Punjab on Tuesday while 49 fresh cases of the coronavirus took the infection tally to 6,03,556, according to a medical bulletin. The death was reported in Mohali district and with this, the toll reached 16,612, it said. Among the fresh cases, Ferozepur reported 14 cases, followed by seven in Mohali and six in Bathinda.

UK’s pre-departure Covid test rules in force to slow Omicron spread
Any travellers arriving in the UK from overseas, including India, have to take a COVID-19 pre-departure test no sooner than 48 hours before their journey, under new rules in force from Tuesday aimed at slowing the spread of the Omicron variant. Any contacts of a suspected Omicron case are already required to self-isolate for 10 days, including those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Additionally, British and Irish citizens returning from the UK’s red list travel ban countries – Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe – are required to hotel quarantine in a government-approved facility as the UK recorded 336 cases of the variant first detected in South Africa.
First case of Omicron detected in Maldives
Maldives Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed that it had detected the Omicron virus after conducting genomic sequencing on samples taken from a tourist from South Africa who arrived in the country on November 27.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the SA national, who is a Gujarati by origin, for flying without informing the authorities in violation of the quarantine norms.

The official said the doctor is under isolation, but he is asymptomatic.

The doctor was among the first two persons to be detected with Omicron in the country. The other was a South African national, who was quarantined and later flew to Dubai.
